Pre-Oscar Movie Reviews

It's such a bummer that my first day at my new workplace is going to be the morning (Sunday night in the US) where the Academy Awards will be held! Anyway, may the best win! Aye?

Had few days off before starting a new adventure so I'm really glad that I get to catch up with some of the nominated films! :)

Philomena
Director: Stephen Frears
Cast: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan
Synopsis: Based on a true story, the movie talks about an unique relationship a former journalist had with Philomena Lee, an old mother who lost her baby boy when she was a young girl when the nuns at a convent sold him off. Together, they went on a journey to look for Philomena's son.
The Thumb-Up(s): Definitely a controversial but heart-warming movie that you need to have your tissue box prepared to watch it. I especially love how they added humour into the script to make the movie not too typical of a sad mother's story. Also big thumb-ups for Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, although I secretly think Colin Firth and Judi Dench would be a perfect combination! :p Check out the beautiful scenery in Ireland too in the movie!
The Thumb-Down(s): While it is expected that the movie is a touching one, it does feel like more can be done to add that up. It just feels a bit 'not there yet' as I finished the movie and went... Ah? Is that all? Perhaps it was because I watched it with a higher hope...
The Verdict: Not a fantastic movie yet for the sake of the controversial storyline, it's still worth a watch.

Captain Phillips
Director: Paul Greengrass
Cast: Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi
Synopsis: Also based on a true story, Richard Phillips went on to Oman for his usual duty as a captain and encountered pirates who hijacked their ship. The movie is a thriller of how he was then finally rescued.
The Thumb-Up(s): The movie is a thriller that makes your heart stop for a few times and makes you just want to know what's coming next. And for that, I must compliment the cinematography of the movie for bringing out the best of an action movie. Best thing is, it doesn't just go action, action and action, but also focuses on the emotions, both for the good guy and the villain in the movie. No doubt, Tom Hanks nailed it playing the main role but that's just his usual him. Barkhad Abdi's performance was truly outstanding, considering this is only his first movie! And I really hope this isn't his last movie!
The Thumb-Down(s): I was expecting it to be more bloody, perhaps? LOL!
The Verdict: I've never heard of anybody who have watched the movie complain about it. And to me, this is definitely not to be missed.

12 Years a Slave
Director: Steve McQueen
Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Lupita Nyong'o
Synopsis: Again, based on a true encounter of Solomon Northup and set in the 1800s, the movie follows Solomon's experience as a free nego kidnapped and sold to become slave for 12 years.
The Thumb-Up(s): Personally, I think the movie owes the most to the strong cast who provided extremely good acting. Be it Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o or Michael Fassbender and others, they made the movie looks so perfect because you could feel for them, especially their pain!  Cinematography wise, the movie is extremely beautiful! The scenery and the colour are simply breath-taking.
The Thumb-Down(s): So another movie about the blacks as slaves, nothing new!
The Verdict: I have a lot of love for this movie but to those who can't take slower paced movies, this is not for you.
